“Turning Points: Black and Working Class Academic Journeys into Health Research” is a documentary study of the journeys taken by Black and working-class academics into health research and their views on the significance of lived experience and social identity for knowledge production. The film follows lives of Professor Amaka Offiah, Professor Helen Minnis, Dr Sharon Cox and Tomi Akingbade bringing together their memories and reflections on paths that led them to academic excellence.


The film is the latest documentary produced by Birkbeck’s Derek Jarman Lab. It is an outcome of a study of the journeys of Black and working-class academics into health research and their views on the significance of lived experience and social identity for knowledge production (part of the IFRC-funded project New Knowledge Producers).
